Detox From Processed Foods

Based on the title of this article, you may be expecting me to suggest some kind of liver cleanse or detox supplement, but at Third Stone Health, we do not use those types of detox programs.  We often suggest more of a “diet reset” which may be spending a week eating only whole foods like vegetables and chicken or fish or doing the Whole 30 whole foods program.  Many of the detox supplements that are out there do little besides causing a laxative effect which will make your weight go down but will not benefit you in any long-term [...]

Community Resources: Allergy-Friendly Bakery

Over the weekend, I planned to bake a dessert for my friend’s 70th birthday. She cannot eat dairy and I planned to make a dairy-free torte. Unfortunately, my oven started to shut itself off so I found myself searching for a bakery that would make a dairy-free cake. This is easier said than done. In the end, I am so grateful that my search led me to Still Delicious, a wonderful bakery and community resource created by Mark Israel and Caren Smith-Israel. This bakery is entirely gluten-free, soy-free and nut-free. They also make many dairy-free, corn-free, vegan and paleo [...]

Root Causes of Constipation and IBS-C

You may be surprised by how many people take laxatives or stool softeners every day. Many of these products were prescribed by a medical provider. When people who have chronic constipation come to our office, we ask questions to determine the cause of their constipation so that we can treat their constipation without the side effects associated with laxatives.
No Single Cause of Constipation
There is no single cause of constipation and often people will have more than one of the root causes on this list.

The Many Causes of Diarrhea: Individualized Treatment for IBS-D

I am surprised by how many people receive a diagnosis of IBS-D (diarrhea type) without ever getting dietary counseling about elimination diets or avoidance of dairy products. People with IBS-D are often prescribed antidiarrheals like Immodium. When people with IBS come to see me, I ask them questions about their diet and the age of onset of their symptoms as well as any known triggers.

I have had two cases of long-term undiagnosed Giardia infections that caused intermittent diarrhea but the vast majority of the patients I see for IBS have great improvements with diet changes or digestive support.

Coconut Oil: Good for Cooking but No Miracle Cure

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently came out with a presidential advisory that coconut oil should be avoided for heart health due to its saturated fat content. Meanwhile, many people in the natural medicine community have been promoting coconut oil as a great way to lose weight based on an extrapolation of research done by Marie-Pierre St-Onge, Ph.D. at Columbia University. So where is the truth? The answer is somewhere in the middle.

Coconut Oil & Saturated Fats
It’s important to note that saturated fats got a bad reputation in part due to hydrogenated fats (also known as trans fats) [...]
